Decorating idea-thrift store sign.

It’s been ages since I’ve been to my favorite thrift store. I’m kinda going through withdrawals. But I’ve been feeling guilty about the huge pile of projects I already need to finish. I thought it would be a good idea to actually complete some of them before I buy more. Because in all honesty, it is getting hard to walk around in my craft room without stubbing my toe.

I found this board buried in my stash:
thrifty-decoratingI actually would have liked it if it had been in good condition. I love the cute font. But alas, it was totally scratched up, so I knew it would need a makeover. I’ve got an empty space in my entryway, and I decided to use this as part of a grouping. First I had to scrape off all the letters and the magnets. Then I have it a good sanding with my palm sander.

After it was nice and smooth again, I primed it. I don’t usually do this when spray painting, but when you are painting something a lighter color, I recommend it. Since I was painting a black board white, I went with primer. Followed by a couple coats of antique white spray paint.

After that I distressed it with a little black paint. I just used craft paint and rubbed it on really lightly with the tip of my finger. Then I added some vinyl lettering, and voila:
thrifty-decoratingI’ve got a brand new custom vinyl lettering sign. Made from a $1.50 plaque that I bought at the thrift store. How’s that for thrifty decorating?!? Now I just need to finish the rest of the grouping so I can hang it on the wall. But that will have to wait because I am in charge of the family reunion this weekend and I haven’t even bought the food, let alone pack. Yikes!

I’ll be linking to these amazing ladies:

  4. That turned out so cute! I have a couple signs like that myself that aren’t really “in” anymore. I have been considering painting them and doing something different with them. Thanks for the idea!

  5. Much nicer. You did a great job.

  6. Brittany says:

so cute. You could have spray painted over everything and then peeled the letters off. That way you’d still have that cute font just in black instead. Oh well….I like what you did with it anyway! And I like the distressed black showing through.

  7. Heather says:

Looks great, I love how you personalized it for your family!

  8. I love that sign!! I never realized how hand those vinyl letters were if you didn’t want them directly on the wall!!

  9. Jenny Bunny says:

That is so cute! Great idea too!

  10. Those are really cute!
