Pie is a favorite dessert at our house. Who doesn’t love pie? I always make them from scratch, but when I was given the chance to try Mrs. Smith’s Signature Deep Dish pies, I figured that with the kitchen makeover still in progress, this was a good time to try something a little easier.

I had a hard time finding them at first, but finally found some at my local Walmart. First up is the Deep Dish Dutch  Apple Pie with Caramel Sauce. One thing I noticed right away is that the crumb topping comes in its own bag. You add the crumbs during the last 20 minutes of baking. I thought that was great, because it ensures that you have a nice crunchy topping.

The house smelled amazing while the pie was baking. My boys could barely wait for it to cool down so they could have a piece. I topped it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, then drizzled it with the caramel that comes with the pie. The bonus of baking it yourself rather than buying a bakery pie is that you can serve it warm. And in my opinion, apple pie must be served warm! :)

The verdict: We loved it! And I will admit that I was surprised that a frozen pie could taste so good. I didn’t like it as much as my homemade pie, but it is the best store bought apple pie I’ve ever had. The crunchy topping is what did it for me. The chunks of apple are nice and big, but it would have been even better with more apples/less sugary filling. My family loved the caramel, but I thought it was plenty sweet without it. If you aren’t a fan of baking pies, I think this is a good option!

And last but not least, we gave the Deep Dish Pumpkin Pie with Cream Cheese Icing a try. Truth be told, no one in my family is a huge pumpkin pie fan. So I decided to try something totally different. I used the pumpkin pie to make Pumpkin Pie Shakes!

I have seen pumpkin pie shakes at our local ice cream shop, but I have never tried one before. Oh my goodness it was yummy! I loved the hint of spice, and the chunks of pie crust in the ice cream. And the addition of the cream cheese icing added a little extra sweetnes that was just perfect. Seriously good people!  I’m including the recipe so you can make some Pumpkin Pie Shakes of your own.

Pumpkin Pie Shake

2 cups vanilla ice cream
1/2-2/3 cup milk
1 1/2 tsp cream cheese icing (included with the pie)
1/8 of a pumpkin pie, chopped (I used Mrs. Smith’s Signature Pumpkin Pie)
Whipped cream

Combine the vanilla ice cream and the milk in the blender. Blend till smooth, adding as much milk as you like. Add the cream cheese icing and the chopped piece of pumpkin pie. Blend just for a few seconds. Serve with whipped cream and a dash of nutmeg.
-Serves 1-2 people
