chocolate dirt pie recipe

Kids and adults alike go crazy for this chocolate dirt pie recipe! With a cream cheese chocolate pudding layer, “dirt” made from Oreo cookie crumbs, and gummy worms, it’s a favorite dessert any time of year.

What is dirt pie made of?

Recipes can vary, but most dirt pie calls for crushed Oreo cookies, chocolate pudding filling, and gummy worms. Whipped cream or Cool Whip and cream cheese are also common ingredients.

It can either be made in a pie pan, or into individual servings in clear plastic or glass cups.

A FUN NO-BAKE DESSERT!

At my house, any time I incorporate chocolate Oreos into a dessert, it’s an instant hit. But crush the cookies to look like dirt and add some gummy worms, and the kids of all ages are ecstatic!

The combination of creamy chocolate filling and crunchy crust ensures that the adults can’t wait to dig in either.

Whipped up in minutes, this Oreo dirt dessert is cool, creamy, refreshing, and sure to become a family favorite!

HOW TO MAKE OREO DIRT PIE:

  1. CRUST – Finely crush the cookies in a food processor. Set aside about 3/4 cup. Add 5 tablespoons of melted butter to the remaining crushed Oreos. Form a pie crust by pressing into the bottom and up the sides of a pie pan. oreo pie crust
  2. CREAM – Use an electric hand mixer to beat the cream to soft peaks. Beat in the powdered sugar and vanilla.
  3. FILLING – In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth, then slowly beat in the milk. Add the instant chocolate pudding to the cream cheese mixture and beat for 1-2 minutes. Fold in the whipped cream. process shots - making oreo dirt pie recipe
  4. ASSEMBLE – Spread the filling evenly over the Oreo cookie crust. For the top layer, sprinkle on the reserved crumbs. process shots - oreo dirt dessert recipe
  5. CHILL – Cover the Oreo dirt pudding with plastic wrap and chill for 6-8 hours, or until the pudding sets.
  6. SERVE – When ready to serve, top the pie with gummy worms, then cut into slices.

If you have leftovers, store them in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. You can transfer the pie slices to an airtight container, or just cover the pie pan tightly with plastic wrap.

PRO TIPS:

  • Make sure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature so you don’t have lumps in your filling.
  • For a true “dirt” look, you need to use a food processor or blender to make fine crumbs. A rolling pin and ziploc bag don’t work as well for this recipe.
  • If you freeze your bowl and beaters for 10-15 minutes, your cream will whip up faster and fluffier.

VARIATIONS:

  • In place of the cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla, you can use an 8-ounce container of Cool Whip whipped topping. Your pie will be more sweet.
  • You can stir chocolate chips or mini marshmallows into the filling.
  • This dessert also works well in individual cups. Just layer the crust, filling, and crumbs into clear plastic cups, then top each one with a gummy worm.
  • For a vanilla version, use golden Oreos and instant vanilla pudding mix.

Equipment

  • Cuisinart Hand Mixer
  • Fiesta 10-1/4-Inch Deep Dish Pie Baker, White
  • Ninja Professional Food Processor, 9-Cup Bowl, 3 Blades

Ingredients

Oreo Crust:

  • 32 Oreos finely ground (3 cups), divided
  • 5 Tbsp salted butter melted

Filling:

  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • ⅓ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 oz cream cheese softened to room temperature
  • 1 3.9 oz box chocolate instant pudding mix
  • 1 ¼ cups milk

Topping:

  • 12 gummy worms

Instructions

  • Use a food processor to very finely crush the Oreo cookies. Set aside about 3/4 cup of the crumbs.
  • To the remaining Oreo crumbs, stir in the melted butter. Firmly press into the bottom and up the sides of a 9" pie pan. Chill.
  • Beat the cream with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. (It will whip up faster if you freeze the bowl and beaters for a few minutes first.) Beat in the powdered sugar and vanilla. Chill.
  • In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Gradually beat in about a half cup of the milk until the mixture is completely smooth. Beat in the rest of the milk.
  • Add the dry pudding mix and beat for 1-2 minutes. Fold in the whipped cream.
  • Spread the filling evenly over the chocolate crumb crust. Sprinkle the reserved cookie crumbs over the top.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 6-8 hours, or overnight.
  • When ready to serve, arrange the gummy worms over the top of the pie, then cut into slices.
