easy book page pumpkin tutorial

Book Page Pumpkin Tutorial . . . with an old book and a few basic craft supplies, you can make a beautiful pumpkin that can match any fall decor!

book page pumpkin made from old book pages

I love decorating with book pages. I love decorating with pumpkins. It was only natural that I combined the two together to make Book Page Pumpkins.

This is such a simple craft project, but the results are stunning. Everyone who sees my book page pumpkin comments on it!

I saw a few book page apples on pinterest, and thought that a pumpkin would be totally cute as well. I buy damaged books at the library for pennies and set them aside for projects like these cute pumpkins.  Hope you like them as much as I do!

Book Page Pumpkin Tutorial

Supplies:
-Paperback book
-Paper and pencil
–Sharp scissors or exacto knife
–Hot glue gun and glue
–Spray Paint
-Stick for stem
-Scrap of ribbon or fabric

Instructions:

1- Make a pumpkin shape out of a piece of paper. I roughly drew one, then folded the paper in half and cut it so it would be symmetrical. Book Page Pumpkin pattern2-Take the cover off of your book and place the pumpkin pattern with the fold on the binding edge. If it doesn’t fit, trim it a little. tracing a Book Page Pumpkin3-Trace around the pattern with a pencil. pumpkin traced onto book pages4-Now it’s time to cut out your pumpkin. You can use an exacto knife, but I found that it was easier just to use scissors. I could cut through 5-6 pages at a time pretty easily. If you don’t have fine tipped scissors to cut all the way to the edge of the binding, you can use an exacto knife there. cutting out a pumpkin from a book5-After you cut all the way around, pull the excess pages over to the binding and they should tear right off. cutting a pumpkin out of an old book6-Now trace around the pumpkin shape and cut through a few more pages. Tip: cut slightly inside the pencil mark, or your pumpkin will keep getting bigger. Yep, I learned that the hard way. Danggit. book page pumpkin instructions photo7-Keep tracing and cutting until you have all the pages done. cut out book page pumpkin8-Now put a thin strip of glue on the very edge. I’m the impatient type, so I used hot glue. 9-Now bring that back page around and attach it to the hot glue, keeping the outside edges as even as possible. Then add a stip of hot glue to that page, and glue the next page to it, just on the inside edges. I sure hope that makes sense. glueing the pages of a book to make a pumpkin10-When you stand your pumpkin up, it will probably look something like this: cute book page pumpkin11-Don’t panic! It just needs to be “fluffed”. Just go around pulling the pages apart and arranging them how you want them. If I had a space where the pages just refused to come together, I added a little hot glue right at the inside seam. When you are done, it should look more like this. It’s OK that there are some spaces. We’ll fix them later. book page pumpkin without stem12- At this point I decided my pumpkin needed a little color. I could have inked all the edges with my orange ink pad. But I knew that would take awhile. So I turned to my best friend Rustoleum. Spray paint that is.

Yep, you can totally spray paint book pages. Just use a very light touch, you don’t want it drenched or anything. One light spritz is all you need.

book page pumpkin sprayed orange13-Now it’s time to add the stem. I just used a stick from my yard. If you have any stubborn pages, now you can bend them to your will. Bwaahaha! I used a bunch of hot glue, then forced the pages where I wanted them and held the stem in place till the glue dried. Voila! 14-Next I tied a ribbon around the stem. Not only does it look cute and add some color, but it hides all the gobs of hot glue. Yay! Book page pumpkin made from old book with wood stem and green ribbon

And just because I love it so, here is another shot of it sitting on my entry table. I think I need to make a few more book page pumpkins so it has some friends. 😉

When u say inside edges are you talking at the spine between the pages or the top and bottom of the pumpkin shape? I’m confused or making it more complicated than it is šŸ˜‚

You want the line of glue on the inside edge close to the spine, running from the top to the bottom. Hope that helps.

I love book page crafts – especially since I cut a ton of pages out of some books to make book boxes! Now I can recycle some old paperbacks! Pinning.

I made 24 book pumpkins to decorate for a staff Halloween Potluck at the high school where I work. With so many to make, I thought it would take a long time to cut them. Then I had the idea of having my husband and son cut the books with the bandsaw. They had 20 of them cut in about 20 minutes. They all had a nice shape and were so cute.

Wow, you’re lucky. They’re usually a dollar here. I find then the cheapest at the library when they get rid of the old books.
