easy utah fry sauce recipe

If you’ve never tried Utah fry sauce, you are in for a treat! It calls for simple ingredients that you already have on hand, and you may never want to eat French fries without it ever again.

Don’t forget to try it with onion rings, sweet potato fries, potato wedges, corn dogs, tater tots, or even as a burger sauce. It’s the perfect dipping sauce for so many foods!

As a Utah native, I can’t even eat fries without fry sauce. I tried it for the first time when I was about 12 years old at an Arctic Circle restaurant in Salt Lake City. I’ve been hooked ever since!

The fast food restaurant is believed to have come up with the original recipe in the 1950’s. Its’ grown in popularity, and now you can find it not only in almost any restaurant in the state of Utah, and even in a few neighboring states.

If we’re traveling and eat at a restaurant that doesn’t serve fry sauce, we whip up our own with packets of ketchup and mayo. That’s how much I love it! 🙂

What is fry sauce made of?

The base of fry sauce is a simple combination of ketchup and mayonnaise, giving it its signature tangy flavor. After that, the options for additional ingredients are endless.

Some say it tastes similar to thousand island dressing, but you can add or subtract ingredients to alter the flavor to your liking!

How to make your own fry sauce:

It doesn’t get much easier than this creamy sauce. Just whisk the ingredients together until smooth, and it’s ready to go!

It’s the ultimate dip for my baked french fries recipe. Give it a try!

Leftovers? You can store fry sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for at least a week.

PRO TIPS:

  • Use a high quality mayo. We like Best Foods (Hellman’s). It’s best with regular mayonnaise, not light, and definitely not olive oil mayo!
  • Regular paprika doesn’t add the same smoky flavor, so if you don’t have smoked paprika, you can just omit it.

OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS YOU CAN TRY:

  • You can replace half of the ketchup with BBQ sauce.
  • A bit of worcestershire sauce adds a savory depth of flavor.
  • You can add garlic powder or onion powder.
  • For a bit of a kick, add red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, hot sauce or chili sauce.
  • We think mayonnaise makes the best fry sauce, but it’s also tasty with Miracle Whip (salad dressing). It will just have a sweeter flavor.
