banana bread recipe with nutella

If you’re looking for a bakery-quality treat you can make at home, this Nutella banana bread recipe is about to become your go-to! It’s easy, moist, and filled with swirls of creamy Nutella.

Perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a cozy afternoon snack, this recipe transforms overripe bananas into something truly special.

Chocolate and bananas are a perfect flavor combination in my book, so it was only a matter of time before I had to pair my jar of Nutella with my favorite banana bread recipe. It didn’t disappoint!

The bread has plenty of bananas, so it’s packed with flavor and extra moist. And biting into a swirl of chocolate-hazelnut spread is pure joy!

The first time I made it, my family devoured the entire loaf in one sitting. I made it again for my husband to take to work, and he came back with nothing but crumbs.

This is one quick bread recipe that you are going to want to make again and again!

Why You’ll Love This Nutella Swirled Banana Bread

  • Super moist texture thanks to ripe bananas and a bit of sour cream
  • Decadent and beautiful Nutella swirls in every slice
  • No fancy ingredients
  • Ready to enjoy in just over an hour
  • It’s a perfect treat any time of day!

How to Make Nutella Banana Bread

  1. PREP – Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. WET INGREDIENTS – In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Add the mashed bananas, eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  3. DRY INGREDIENTS -In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. COMBINE -Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Stir just until combined—don’t overmix.
  5. ADD NUTELLA -Pour half the banana bread batter into the prepared pan. Drop spoonfuls of Nutella over the batter and swirl gently with a knife. Repeat with remaining batter and chocolate spread.
  6. BAKE– Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees, then turn the oven temp down to 325°. Bake an additional 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean (a little Nutella is fine).
  7. COOL -Let the banana loaf cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Tips for the Best Nutella Banana Bread

  • If your Nutella is cold and thick, you may need to warm it so you can make swirls in the batter.
  • To keep the bread tender, avoid overmixing after you add the dry ingredients.
  • On the top layer of Nutella, try to keep it away from the side of the pan because it tends to burn.
  • Spray the pan liberally and use parchment for easy removal.
  • For maximum sweetness, use very ripe bananas with brown or black spots.brown bananas for bread

Variations:

  • If you don’t have brown sugar, you can use regular granulated sugar instead.
  • Nutella Banana Muffins: Divide batter into 18 muffin tins and bake for about 18–22 minutes at 350°.
  • Healthier Option: Substitute half the flour with whole wheat flour, use just 1/2 cup of sugar, and replace the sour cream with Greek yogurt.
  • Dairy-Free Version: Use avocado oil or coconut oil instead of butter.
  • Mix-ins: Feel free to add chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or coconut to the batter. Just keep in mind that adding additional ingredients can increase the baking time.

FAQs About Nutella Banana Bread

Can I use frozen bananas?
Yes, you can use frozen bananas for bread, but they don’t work quite as well. They release liquid as they thaw, and you have to drain it off, or it throws off the texture of the bread. But this does remove some of the flavor, and it won’t be quite as moist.

Can I use black bananas?
Yes, you can still use your bananas even if they have started to turn black. When it comes to baking with bananas, the riper they are, the more flavor and sweetness they will add to your bread!

Why do I need to turn down the oven temperature?
The higher heat at the beginning of the baking cycle helps the bread to rise. Turning the heat down halfway through baking allows the middle of the bread to cook without the edges becoming dry and overcooked.

Equipment

  • USA Pan 9×5″ Steel 1.25 Lb Loaf Pan, Silver
  • Cuisinart Hand Mixer

Ingredients

  • ½ cup salted butter, softened to room temperature
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 ½ cups mashed overripe bananas (3-4 large bannas)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ⅓ cup light sour cream (or greek yogurt)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread

Instructions

  • Spray a 9×5 inch loaf pan with cooking spray and line the bottom with parchment paper. Preheat your oven to 350°.
  • In a large bowl, beat the butter and brown sugar with an electric hand mixer for about 2 minutes, or until fluffy.
  • Use a potato masher or fork to mash the bananas. Add the mashed bananas, eggs, sour cream, and vanilla to the sugar mixture. Beat until thoroughly combined.
  • Whisk together the flour, soda, and salt in a small bowl. Add to the wet ingredients and stir just until combined.
  • Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan, then drizzle half of the Nutella on top of the batter. Repeat with the remaining batter and rest of the Nutella. Try not to let much of the Nutella touch the sides of the pan; it tends to burn.
  • Bake the bread in a preheated oven at 350° for 30 minutes. Turn the heat down to 325°; bake for another 30 minutes, or until no wet batter comes out on a toothpick inserted in the center.
  • Let the bread cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes, then carefully invert onto a cooling rack. Bread slices easier after it is completely cool, but it is simply delicious warm!

Notes

  • Leftover banana bread can be stored in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap for up to a week. You can also wrap it in plastic wrap and place it in a heavy duty freezer bag. It can be frozen for 3-4 months. Let thaw at room temperature.
