I got the recipe for the seasoning base from my friend Kaelynn. She used it on a combination of crackers and pretzels, which she brought to a ladies’ retreat. We were all obsessed and couldn’t stop eating them!

Since I had an abundance of oyster crackers, I thought it was worth a shot to adapt her easy recipe. And boy am I glad I did! They are incredibly delicious, and their tiny size makes them fun to eat!

What Are Spiced Oyster Crackers?

Despite the name, oyster crackers don’t contain oysters. 🤣 They’re tiny, hexagon-shaped crackers originally served alongside oyster stew and clam chowder. (Think of them like mini saltine crackers.)

Now, in addition to being served with soup, they are often used as a base for crunchy snack mixes like this one. It’s crunchy, salty, and has a kick of heat. Snacking perfection!

Tips for the Best Seasoned Oyster Crackers

  • If your bowl doesn’t have a lid, stir gently to avoid breaking the crackers.
  • Don’t overcrowd the baking sheet.
  • Stir halfway through baking for even seasoning.
  • Bake low and slow to prevent burning.
  • Let cool completely before storing.

Delicious Variations

  • Spicy Version – Add extra red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.
  • Cheesy Version – Mix in finely grated Parmesan cheese or cheddar cheese powder.
  • Change up the spices – add dill weed, onion powder, lemon pepper, or Italian seasoning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to bake the crackers?

No, but I definitely recommend it. Baking helps the seasoning adhere better and creates an extra-crispy texture that can’t be beat. However, you can simply toss the crackers with the seasoning and let them sit for several hours, stirring occasionally, until the oil is absorbed.

Can I use butter instead of oil?

Yes, melted butter adds a rich flavor, though the crackers may soften slightly over time. Oil helps keep them crisp longer. If you want to use butter, I recommend using half melted butter/half olive oil.

Can I make this spiced oyster cracker recipe ahead of time?

Absolutely! They’re one of the best make-ahead party snacks because they taste great for days!

Can I double the recipe?

Yes! You will need to use two baking sheets or bake in batches so you can stir the crackers without them falling off the cookie sheet.
