I feel like my posts this last week were all business and not enough fun stuff. I’m happy to announce I’m back to sharing decorating ideas! Today I’m going to show you how to make an easy and inexpensive wreath. I made mine for Halloween, but you can totally adapt it.
The Halloween wreath I’ve used for years was horribly outdated and getting dingy looking, so I tossed it out last October. When I pulled out all my decorations this year, I realized I needed to make something for my front door. I found several wreaths in blogland that I loved, but I didn’t have the materials for any of them. So I came up with my own creation using stuff I already had.
Have I mentioned how much I love using canvas painter’s drop cloths? Loooove them! I used them again for this project. You can use fabric of any type though. Or even some ribbon. I think that would be gorgeous as well. Be creative!!!
Shabby Fabric Wreath Tutorial-Halloween Style
First you need a wreath form. I was planning on using a styrofoam one, but this is what I had, so I used it instead. Mine was 18″, but you can use whatever size you like. You can find them at the Dollar Store.
First off you want to cover the wreath. Tear strips of your fabric into 1 1/2-2″ strips. Wrap them around the wreath and periodically use hot glue to secure them on.
Now you’re ready to make all your fabric knots. I used 1 1/2″ wide strips. You need to cut them about 10″ long.
Now just tie them into a simple knot, just like you tie your shoe. Easy peasy.
Make a lot of them. I started with this pile and it didn’t even get me halfway. For my 18″ wreath, I ended up using about 60 of them.
Now it’s time to assemble your wreath. Just apply a small amount of hot glue to the middle, and attach one of your knots.
At first I was attaching them really close together, but I started spacing them a little farther apart, like this:
Here is what it looks like when all your knots are on.
At this point you could just hang it the way it is, or you can embellish it however you like. I wanted to add some color for Halloween, so I added some fabric rosettes.
I used a very tiny amount of hot glue to secure them. When Halloween is over, I plan on pulling off the black and purple and adding some golds and browns for fall.
There you have it, a cute and versatile shabby fabric wreath. You can adapt it for any season of the year. I just love how it turned out! So much prettier than my old wreath. 🙂
I’ve been debating whether or not it needs a bow on top. I can’t decide on a color, so I still haven’t added one yet. What’s your opinion. Does it need a bow? What color would you add?
Looks good. I would vote for a bow, though.
Now that it’s been up for awhile I’m thinking the same thing. š
Wow that is soo cute! You are so creative!!!

For Halloween I’d add a rubber spider at the top left, then for fall switch it to a ribbon maybe. It’d just add a touch of fun. The problem would be finding the right one. š I like how you wraped the wreath. My fall wreath is the same wreath from the dollar store.
I like it! I am in need of a good Halloween wreath, but of course with the remodeling I don’t think I’ll even decorate this year, let alone get costumes done! ARGH! I feel constantly behind. But I’m trying to take my time and still enjoy the projects at hand! Don’t forget to come link up to my party too! (Tuesday’s!)
